Engineering Manager

Position: Engineering Manager
Reporting To: Site & Planning Manager

Overview:

This post is a salaried position and as such, whilst contracted at 39 hours per week, working hours are dependent upon needs of the business. This may include working weeks in excess of 39 hours as required. Working week is based on five over seven days, to include bank holidays and weekends as applicable.

The Engineering Manager will manage effectively and efficiently the day to day operation of the engineering / maintenance department. This position has responsibility for organizing and maintaining a preventative maintenance system for the site; managing the sourcing of plant spares and the maintenance of stock levels. To work hand in hand with other departments to produce quality, cost effective product, whilst abiding by all statutory requirements and Company Policies. To work as part of a team to ensure that Quality, HACCP and safety standards are met to produce the highest quality products and service to internal and external customers, with maximum plant efficiencies and minimum downtime.

The Engineering Manager will be expected to drive improvement in; health and safety performance, equipment reliability/availability, manufacturing processes, cost of manufacture and energy efficiency through the effective management of people, plant optimization, plant and process development and the use of measurement and performance management. Responsibility for ensuring food safety, integrity, legality and quality shall be clearly allocated and understood by line reports within areas of departmental responsibility.


Areas of Responsibility to include (not exclusively):
 Fresh milk and cream processing and packing equipment;
 UHT processing and packing equipment;
 Butter processing and packing equipment;
 Clean in place (CIP) systems;
 Ice Cream processing and packing equipment;
 Yogurt processing and packing equipment;
 Compressed air systems;
 Steam boilers and ancillary equipment as applicable;
 Air handling units and refrigeration.


Key Responsibilities to include:
 Managing the daily operation of the site maintenance function, identifying the root cause of problems and developing solutions in order to maximise efficiency and conform to internal and legal requirements.

 Maintaining and driving Overall Equipment Effectiveness and reliability as well as continuously improving plant performance across all aspects of the site.

 Managing the team on a daily basis, motivating and delegating work to ensure daily targets are achieved and that work is carried out efficiently and effectively.

 Managing the preventative maintenance management system.

 Coach and / or mentor colleagues, embracing shared knowledge to develop skills and to strengthen the team.

 Investigating and constantly improving and analysing causes of breakdowns and modifying plant and equipment to eliminate them.

 Liaising and co-operating with Production Manager to deliver agreed KPI’s.

 Ensuring that the factory infrastructure is kept at the required standard for a food manufacturing facility.

 Ensuring health, safety, quality and good engineering practice standards are maintained.

 Ensuring management of contractors is carried out efficiently and that contractors comply with Company Health & Safety Policy and Insurance Indemnity forms, method statements and that risk assessments are completed prior to commencing work.

 Assist with the formulation of revenue and capital budgets and plans, initiating and agreeing action required to achieve budgetary spend.

 Actively promote safety based culture and the application of all Health & Safety and quality requirements; identifying improvements in these areas where necessary.

 Building and grounds maintenance.

 To attend training meetings where necessary and to implement training updates as required and to ensure that all line reports are adequately trained to perform their duties correctly and safely.

 To pursue personal development of skills and knowledge necessary for the effective performance of the role.

 To ensure the engineering working areas are kept clean and tidy.

 To actively participate in a hands on / on the tools role as required.

 To participate in other duties that may from time to time be required.

 Dairy manufacturing / product knowledge and degree is preferred.
