Laboratory Technician: 12-month fixed-term contract

Position: Laboratory Technician 

Report to: Laboratory Manager

Overview:

Jersey Dairy are seeking to recruit a Laboratory Technician on a 12-month fixed-term contract. Responsible for the day to day testing of farm milk and milk products during processing, packing and the duration of shelf life.

You will ensure that all products are of the highest quality and sub-standard products are intercepted prior to release for sale. And give technical assistance to other departments within Jersey Dairy when necessary.

You will be involved in the design and development of new products, and ensure food safety, integrity, legality and quality shall be clearly understood within areas of responsibility.

This is a full-time, salaried position (39 hours per week) on a 12-month fixed-term contract. 

Key Responsibilities:

• To understand the requirements of and to assist in the implementation of the Jersey Dairy Quality Management and Food Safety Systems and accreditation.

• To ensure accurate testing of all incoming milk from farms, ensuring dairy farmers are notified of problems without delay as applicable.

• The accurate testing of all products during processing, packing and during shelf life.

• To understand the meaning of test results and to take action as appropriate.

• To ensure that all testing is recorded accurately to meet internal and legal requirements.

• To ensure that all internal and external legal standards are complied with regarding Jersey Dairy products.

• To assimilate and apply developments in new and existing testing protocols as and when required.

• To ensure that laboratory procedures are carried out to recognized Health and Safety protocols.

• To investigate and resolve product quality complaints, liaising with customers as necessary.

• To attend internal and external training courses when required pre-requisite with role.

• To undertake other duties that may from time to time be required.

Key Qualities:

In order to be able to carry out these tasks you must gain an in-depth knowledge of the diverse testing methods and evaluation of test results.

• A minimum of five GCSEs at grade A to C and at least grade B in the Science subject. (essential)

• Higher degree in Science related field (desired)

• Knowledge or experience in microbiology, chemistry or physics

• Team player

• Excellent organisational skills

• Ability to communicate at all levels

• Ability to work on own initiative

• Ability to work under pressure

• Computer literate

• Intermediate food hygiene qualification (training provided)

• High level of flexibility
